Storing of the finished wine

Hello
I was wondering how important it is to store my finished wine bottles laid down flat as opposed to stood upright. My wine kit instructions say to lay them on their side for storage, but finding an easy way to keep them safely on their side in my garage is going to be difficult, especially with 2 kids getting bikes in and out and throwing them down anywhere! I would much rather store them upright in boxes. What do you think?

The reason for this is usually to keep the corks moist which ensures an airtight seal, with home brew wines often people do just stand them up as it is easier to store them. There are wine racks available to help stack the bottles out of the way in a horizontal position, how important it is to have them horizontally probably depends on how long they will be stored for

Thanks for the great reply. Will probably keep them upright in boxes. I don't think they will be in storage for any longer than 6 months, so I guess they will be OK for that length of time.
    Cheers
