As a newby,should a hydrometer be sterilised before checking values or is this going over the top ?? or is just washing under tap OK

It is important to make sure everything which comes into contact with your brew is clean, ideally sterilised. Failures with brews are thankfully not very common, but when they do happen it is usually down to contamination, so it pays to be safe and sterilise anything which touches your brew. Everyone cuts corners sometimes and it is usually OK, but it is best to be thorough!
