Festival Pride Of London Porter

Thanks for my prize. It is in the pressure barrel. The kit does not tell you too reduce the sugar in a pressure barrel. The barrel was close to blowing and the base started to bulge. Released a bit of the excess pressure and seems fine. Now in the cool clearing. Due to pull first pint on 4 December.

The new Festival kts come with the amount of priming sugar recommended by the manufacturers, suitable for barrel or bottle, in the case of this particular one it is 90 grammes. You should use all the priming sugar supplied. There are a couple of things worth checking, it is best to be sure that the brew has completely finished fermenting as this would create more pressure within the barrel, and also that the safety valve on the barrel is working correctly. What sometimes happens is that the valves can stick if they have become sticky from contact with the brew, so it is wise to check that the rubber band on the outside of the cap is free, perhaps make sure it is well rinsed in warm water between brews to avoid any problems. You did the right thing though, whilst the barrel would more than likely have vented itself, and we have no reports of any failing, letting some excess pressure out will ensure no problems occur. We have also had barrels that bulge under the pressure, but the safety valves have always worked when needed, it is suprising how much pressure can be created and what the barrels are capable of withstanding. Keeping an eye on them is a wise precaution though, as a clogged escape vent could be a problem.

Once cleared and ready for drinking we'd love to hear what you think of the London Porter
