Hi

I have just started off my first batch of Woodforde's Nelson. When primary fermentation is complete I intend bottling it on this occasion, but i'm not sure if I shoiuld be adding sugar to each bottle.

The instructions are clear when transferring into a barrel (add half a teaspoon of sugar per pint) but doesn't mention what to do if bottling.

I'd appreciate some clarity on this if someone could help please.

Thank you so much.

You should always prime your brew when transferring to either a keg or bottles. This additional priming sugar helps to carbonate the brew and creates secondary fermentation, which then pressurises the keg or bottles. As a guide Woodfordes recommend half a teaspoon per pint, so if using 500ml bottles use half a teaspoon of sugar. If using smaller or larger bottles alter the quantity of sugar to suit. With lagers and ciders more priming sugar is often used as those drinks are usually wanted more carbonated
