Yeast Harvesting

Hi, has anybody ever tried yeast harvesting from the remains of a brew of beer ?

Having come across several videos on YouTube showing how it's done, I decided to give it a try.

It's acctually pretty straight forward by the looks of things, but I totally failed. On all the videos, the remaining yeast settles out into two distinct layers, the darked dead yeast below the live yeast layer, and after a couple of washes all you do is pour off the upper layer and either re use or store it.

My experiment totally failed to separate. This might well have been because I used finings to help clarify the brew before  syphoning it off for secondary fermentation ? What I was left with was a uniform layer of slightly granular lumps which never really settled out into different layers.

Does anybody have any experience of doing this, or any opinions as to why my attempt failed ?
