warm beer = clear: cold beer cloudy ??

Hello Brewistas, my beer is in bottles and sits on the kitchen floor which has underfloor heating and has been happily carbonating (PET bottles have become firm to touch) - yesterday I put a couple of bottles in a cool shed and this morning they are not exactly cloudy but definitely less clear. Is this permanent or will they clear again over time?

Hi Tom_B, it sounds like you have a protein haze going on, it is nothing to worry about and is described here with more info:

'A chill haze is not to be confused with cloudy brews, it can sometimes develop when a brew is chilled down in a fridge, etc, and will sometimes clear again when the brew is warmed back up. It is due to haze-producing proteins and polyphenols suspended in the brew, when the brew is chilled they react and clump together into tiny particles which reflect the light, making the brew look hazy. Whilst it doesn't look great, it in no way affects the taste and is not a problem. Allowing the brew to stand so it settles may help, but there is little that can be done about it.'

Hey Tom-B, that is excellent news, it sounds as though the suspended yeast has settled in the bottles, you may have a little sediment settled in the base - if so just pour carefully to avoid stirring it up and getting into your glass, and the flavours should have continued to develop over the last few weeks too
