Youngs harvest brew kits

Just put in Youngs Scottish Heavy kit to brew. Web site instructions say 1kg brew enhancer or sugar needed. Took instructions off can and it says 1kg of white sugar only refers to the Bitter lager and mild kits. Sottish Heavy, Yorkshire Bitter and Pilsner lager all require 1.5kg of white sugar .

Used the 1kg Muntons brew ehancer plus 0.5kg of white sugar which was all we had available. Will this mixture cause any problems? Put brew in on Tuesday, and today ( Friday) there is still little fermentation.

We'll have a look at that and update where needed thanks, but you have done the right thing, and using a kg of enhancer with 0.5kgs of sugar will result in a good finished brew. Using an amount of enhancer in place of sugar is a great way to improve a brew and get better results, so you could use all brew enhancer or any mixture of sugar and enhancer, or all sugar. Brewing sugar is recommended but you can use a standard white granulated sugar too. You can alter the amount of water or sugars in any brew to alter the strength of it too.

You shouldn't worry that the mixture will cause a problem, if anything it will be improved, and it is the same for any manufacturers ingredients kits, if it says to use sugar you can instead use an enhancer or spraymalt. Manufacturers such as Coopers recomed to upgrade their kits to use an enhancer which they specify on the tins. Fermenting times do vary and how vigorous they are too, with it being cooler at the moment this always increases fementation times and reduces the visible signs, unless you are able to keep the brew nice and warm, sometimes it needs a heating device to help
