Hi, this is probably a daft question, but which is the best method.. using siphon or simply using my fermeter’s tap? Siphoning is obviously the usual way, but would using the tap mean less air would get in or less sediment maybe?
Hi Steve, if you have a tap fitted to your fermenter this can make it easier, if you just allow the liquid to splash when transferring this can mix air in. To stop this you can either use a length of tube fitted to the tap, or if bottling use a bottling stick to stop and start the flow:
You're spoilt for choice! You may find you have a method you prefer, if bottling then a little bottler is great, the auto syphons are handy for filling bottles too, just keep the end of the suction tube above the sediment layer in your fermenter when using a tube of any kind

Bottling stick only (attaches to 8mm inner diameter syphon tube too: https://www.home-brew-online.com/equipment-c40/home-brew-online-little-bottler-bottling-stick-with-lever-tap-p669
Whichever method you use try not to disturb the sediment and leave as much behind as possible

That said, I always filter my wine when bottling.
