When brewing a 40 pint / 23 litre kit, how many 500ml bottles should I expect to bottle once fermentation is complete? Or in other words, how much of the brew should be thrown away once it's nearing the bottom of the FV?

I normally get about 40 - 44 bottles out of 40 pint brew, I used to stop when it gets sludge like at the bottom, but now I have a FV with a tap and little bottler, I stop when it stops giving me beer, still about 44 bottles !
