Creating a beer from a can of malt?

Hello,

I ended up with a couple of cans of this: http://www.home-brew-online.com/ingredients-c45/thomas-coopers-extract-1-5kg-light-p543 The first can I used with a John Bull beer kit instead of brewing sugar. I wasn't too keen on the end result although my Dad quite liked it so he's now got a lot of free beer!

Am I being stupid here or is the following possible?
I was wondering what to do with the 2nd can and I thought it's malt extract which is basically what a beer kit is (that's right isn't it?) so couldn't I make my own beer recipe with it?

Put the can of malt with 1kg of brewing sugar, like a beer kit, and add the water and a sachet of yeast. Then after the most vigorous part of primary fermentation has calmed down hop it with something like this: http://www.home-brew-online.com/ingredients-c45/cascade-finishing-hops-20g-p1098 then after a few days bottle as normal?

Would that work or am I missing something?

Cheers, Mike...

    Hi Mike, you're right, the malt extract is similar to the extract you get in beer kit ingredients, unless it says though it is not hopped so you would need to add hops in the way you describe to give it some flavour etc. Tins of light malt extract (LME) and other extracts are often used either instead of sugar in beer kit, or as a base as you describe and then make a brew of your choice by adding hops or other ingredients. Some malt extracts are hopped such as the Briess range. We have a range of recipe bundles which will give you an idea of a few suggested recipes, you could use your LME and add hops of your choice etc, these ones also use some crushed grain for flavour, some have Briess extract but you can use Coopers in the same way;

    Hello,

    Excellent, thank you very much for the info, that's very useful and you answered a question I had on another post (what does LME stand for), now that's efficient!

    I think I'll give that a go once the Simply Bitter I've got brewing (with added hops, it's really good with added hops, have made it before) is finished.

    Cheers, Mike....
