The CO2 bulbs are a quick substitute to the natural CO2 that builds up during secondary fermentation which takes place in the pressure barrel. They are usually used when the pressure barrel is around half empty as it takes much longer for the natural CO2 to build up, so its easy to put a bulb in and have instant pressure. Two or maybe three would usually be needed for one brew. They won't carbonate your beer anymore as the secondary fermentation stage will already be completed.
