stirring beer thats brewing ?

i'm a complete beginner when it comes to brewing (on 3rd brew at the moment using kits).
is it a good idea to stir the brewing beer or leave it stationary ?
just a thought as I could make a stirrer to sit in the brew tub to stir the mix without having to expose the beer to the air.
thoughts please
many thanks
chris

Hi Chris, once the brew is fermenting it is best to try to minimise disturbance to it, and in most cases the brew will just ferment away on it's own. If when you take a hydrometer reading the brew's reading is still very high when you believe it should be much lower then a good stir to re-suspend the yaeast often gets it going and help it drop the last few points. Try to keep the brew at the recommended temperature as this really helps and when you add the yeast try to ensure the brew is not too hot or cold as this cna harm the yeast
